FBBC – November 2019 meeting
Although our numbers were slightly reduced due to people being unwell, we had a good group for our November meeting who came to hear James Hunt from Everyman Advisory talk how business owners should consider their succession strategy. We welcomed for the first time Belinda Elliot from Bluestream Recruitment, based in Harwell.
Jonathan Russell opened the meeting by inviting everyone to give their 60 – 90 second ‘pitch’ starting with Bryan Orchard from Cartridge UK based in Wantage. Bryan talked about the changing nature of his business and his particular interest in finding out more about the options available should he decide to retire. Everyone else then described their own business or service and once again it was amazing to hear about the wide range of products and services available to businesses in the Faringdon area. From business automation (Cloud Perfect) to ‘everyday handyman’ (JB property Services) through voice recognition software (Talking Typist), digital marketing (Concise Digital) and not forgetting leadership development through working with horses (Routes 2 Success) and accountancy for ‘owner-occupied’ businesses (Reese Russell).
James Hunt gave us a very well-illustrated analysis of four main alternatives for anyone who is thinking about walking away from their business and they were: Trade Sale; Closure; Management Buy-Out; and Family Transfer. He looked at each one in turn identifying the sometimes-unforeseen risks that can occur if business owners fail to plan carefully and communicate their intention effectively. For anyone thinking about walking away from their business then more information can be found at www.everymanadvisory.co.uk.
Our next meeting will be on 2 December when we start the festive season by taking part in our Christmas Quiz. Quizmaster Jonathan Russell is renowned for finding questions that only a true ‘Yuletide Geek’ could answer but all in a wonderfully fun way with a prize for the person who answers the most questions correctly.
